Project Overview

Valor at New Market Heights is a feature-length documentary that tells the story of Black Union soldiers of the United States Colored Troops who fought in a decisive Civil War battle outside Richmond in 1864. Their bravery helped shape the outcome of the war and redefine American citizenship—yet their story remains largely unknown.

Why This Story Matters

Fourteen Medals of Honor were awarded to Black soldiers at the Battle of New Market Heights—the highest concentration in any single Civil War engagement. Yet this extraordinary act of courage remains largely absent from textbooks and public memory.

A Unique Storytelling Approach

This project is grounded in primary historical sources, expert scholarship, and lived military experience. The film blends documentary interviews with dramatized scenes performed by actors, creating an immersive and historically grounded experience. The project is being developed with historians, battlefield experts, and descendants of the United States Colored Troops. Retired Army Colonel and actor Greg Gadson (Battleship) is attached to the project and will feature prominently.
